Glasvezel de Wolden (FiberOptic De Wolden) is a non-profit foundation, aiming to build a state-of-the-art fiber-optic network delivering very high-speed Internet covering the entire area of the municipality of De Wolden, located in the south-west part of the province of Drenthe in The Netherlands.
Our municipality has about 10,000 homes spread over an area of about 227 square kilometers (87.65 sq miles) - tiny from an international perspective, no doubt!
We are in the process of building a community-owned fiber-optic network, connecting everyone, from the homes in the small villages to the furthest houses and farms in the countryside. Our motto is: "By the people, for the people".
By connecting everyone, we hope to boost the vitality and attractiveness of our municipality. By having a super-fast fiber network, owned and operated by community owned non-profit organisations we hope to make our municipality more attractive to high-tech startups and young entrepreneurs coming to live and work here.
Declining population is a problem in our community causing facilities such as libraries, supermarkets, public transport and schools to close down. We believe that having a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure is the best way to counter that decline and to prevent a collapse of the socio-economic system. Our goal is to attract new young residents in order to have a thriving, vibrant community.
Our fiber-optic network is the most advanced in Europe, where three ISP’s are delivering IP-TV, VoIP and Internet with speeds of up to 10 Gbit/sec symmetrical for consumers at a price of less than €100 per month or 1Gbit/sec for €31 per month. Our technical team offers support to new innovative companies wanting to set up their operations in our municipality.
Are you or is your organisation interested in moving here? You are welcome! We have space, nature, friendly people and the fastest fiber-optic network here.
